Give Your Wallet A Break From Lush With DIY Bath Bombs
I am not one to tell you what to do with your money but sometimes our wallets can use a break! If you are a bath bomb addict like myself, you know how expensive the habit can get.
When you are buying them from Lush you are spending anywhere from $5 to $13 per bath bomb. If you are buying from local hand makers you are also still spending $5 or more per bath bomb. I personally use about 2-4 bath bombs each week depending on my mood. I love a good relaxing soak in the tub. If I were to buy my bath bombs from Lush or a hand maker I would be spending $10 to $20 per week, $40 to $80 per month, just on bath bombs. I don’t know about you, but that is too rich for my wallet!
Of course, I love DIY’s. Not only are they fun, they also save me a lot of money! Making my own make-up remover/facial cleansing wipes, charcoal mask, sugar body scrubs, finger paint for Bella, and more truly helps me save money. I stared making DIY Bath Bombs at home to save myself some money.
I’ve yet to win the lottery so thoughtless spending isn’t something I am keen on. I am a monthly budget lover. I track my spending each month and I make adjustments in areas where I see I am spending too much.
Luxuries like bath bombs is one place I needed to make an adjustment. I spent time testing online DIY Bath Bombs and found that none of the recipes worked perfectly. However, I was able to tweak one that was pretty close to perfect, and now I am going to share it with you.
DIY Bath Bombs Tutorial
Follow through my DIY Bath Bombs tutorial for step-by-step instructions. At the end of the tutorial will be a printable recipe for you with all the ingredients and instructions on how to make them.
First thing you will need to do is measure out your dry ingredients. You will need baking soda, citric acid, corn starch, and Epsom salt.
Next you will need to place all your wet ingredients into a small bowl and give them a quick mix. You will need coconut oil, water, essential or fragrant oil, and food colouring.
In a medium to large-sized mixing bowl you will pour in all your dry ingredients.
Next you will want to whisk the ingredients together really well.
It is extremely important that you add the liquid mixture to your dry mixture a little bit at a time. If you don’t the citric acid will over activate with the baking soda and your bombs won’t fizz in the tub. Whisk well after each addition of liquid.
Slow and steady wins the race as they say. Continue to slowly add in your liquid mixture, a little at a time, whisking well after each time you add liquid.
This is the longest part aside from the dry time. It may be a bit tedious but you will be headed to your bath for some relaxation soon enough. Remember to whisk well after you add in more liquid. Continue to do this until you’ve added all your liquid.
Woo hoo, you have made it to the end of mixing. Your mixture should feel like wet (not soaking) sand. When you grab a handful and squeeze, it should easily bind together.
I use these metal bath bomb molds I purchased on Amazon but there are many molds you can use. You can even use cookie cutters.
Whatever you choose to use, in order for your bath bomb to form it needs to be compressed. If using cookie cutters I suggest placing the cutter on a lined baking sheet, then really pack and press the mixture into the cutter. To remove from the cutter you want to gently tap to loosen it.
When using a round mold like mine you will want to place your mixture in one side at a time. I place a handful in and press down, then add more and press again. You will want to have it “over-filled” so that when you press the two sides together they compress and join.
I take mine out of the mold right away by gently tapping with a butter knife, one side at a time. I then place them on a lined baking sheet and let them dry for about 24 hours before using.
Once your DIY Bath Bombs are dry you can package them up. I like to use these shrink wrap film bags from Amazon to seal and protect my bath bombs from moisture. If giving as a gift you can get fancy and after the shrink wrap is on place them in a little sack, wrap them again in some brown craft paper, or slap on a chalk board type sticker and write on it. You can also totally use plastic wrap but I find it doesn’t seal as good as the shrink wrap does.
DIY Bath Bombs Recipe
The recipe below will make 3 large-sized bath bombs. You can also double the recipe to make more or have two different colours/scents. Using smaller molds will yield more bath bombs.
