This fall as the days are cooler and the nights colder, as I prepare for our annual Thanksgiving celebrations and currently fight off one heck of a nasty cold (thanks back to school germs) I begin to realize how much petroleum plays a HUGE role in my life, in all our lives.
I will admit prior to this I was pretty ignorant to it all and if you asked me what products I use that are made from petroleum I maybe could have listed a handful. After actually looking into it I was honestly astounded with how many things we use each and every day, how many things we rely on, come from crude oil.
We didn’t have much of a summer in my opinion and I am the type that loves to crank my central air in the heat of the summer as I hate to be hot. However when fall arrives with it’s cooler temps I am also that person that cranks the heat because I hate to be cold – I am weird I know! Natural gas is what keeps me snugly warm on those brisk nights right through the cold harsh winter I can only expect is coming our way after last year!
When I delivered Isabella 6 weeks early it was gasoline that got me to the hospital in time to save both our lives and it was gasoline that brought us to and from the hospital for those long 18 days we had to visit our precious baby girl in the NICU. The plastic tubes that helped my little girl breathe when she couldn’t on her own, yup you guess it – plastic is a petroleum-based product and without it she might not be here today.
Or the gas that powered the York Region Paramedic Ambulance that rushed me back to the hospital the day after going home from delivering Bella when I couldn’t breathe and was having severe chest pains.
Gas to me and many is the most obvious need that petroleum takes care of; it is an essential part of our quality of life. I, like probably many Canadians are totally unaware of the many products that are made from crude oil, things that I personally couldn’t live without, could you?
We as Canadians rely heavily on petroleum to make the gasoline that gets us where we need to be, whether you drive a car, van or truck, take the bus, train, boat or plane, they all rely on gasoline! Even bicycles are made from petroleum-based products.
Just think of your day from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed, the products and devices you use.
The alarm clock or mobile device you use to ensure you are up for the day and on time are made from petroleum-based products.
The clothes you put on, those too are made from petroleum-based products.
No one likes stinky breath but as you can probably guess your toothpaste, toothbrush and mouthwash are all made from petroleum-based products.
Need to have a shower? Well don’t expect to have many options when it comes to getting clean as many of our products we use daily in the shower come from petroleum-based products.
Going on a hot date after work? Well put down that make-up as much of what you use currently is made from petroleum-based products.
Did you catch a cold? Well those medicines that will help you get better and give you some relief are made from petroleum-based products too!
Sleeping on a pillow? Not if there isn’t petroleum-based products!
You are probably reading this post from your computer, which without petroleum there would be no computers.
Recently, I was sharing with you all the beautiful DIY decor I was doing for Bella’s nursery. I was covering wooden letters with yarn that matches her custom bedding colours. Well if it wasn’t for petroleum-based products like yarn that craft wouldn’t have been possible!
